Talk Like a Pirate Day

Talk Like a Pirate Day is this September 19th. The day is observed to celebrate the victories and ongoing fight against intelligent design. Learn more about the day here and make sure to order our Pastafarian tabling supplies including our new Flying Speghetti Monster stickers. There are also more recent reasons to observe the day considering the ongoing prosecution of Russian minorities. You may want to treat the day as a celebration and continued recognition of our freedom of expression in this country.

Hug An Atheist Week

Hug an Atheist Week is an event from October 1-7 during which local nonreligous communities are encouraged to have at least one Hug an Atheist fundraiser benefitting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). The event was inspired by Illini Secular Student Alliance, where the group held a successful month-long Hug An Atheist fundraiser for LLS during their Light The Night event. Hug an Atheist Week allows your community to participate in an international partnership between the secular community and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The LLS provides financial support for scientific research, educational efforts, and patient care. These are services which speak to the values of humanists everywhere. Hug an Atheist events are service events fundraising for a great cause which simultaneously serve to break down stereotypes and stigmas surrounding nonreligious individuals.

Read More about Hug An Atheist Week and see other ways to get involved with LLS and Light The Night!

Join the SSA's Leaderspace on Facebook

One of the greatest services we offer for secular students is a way to get in contact with eachother which is why we started our Facebook Leaderspace group. Join today and keep in contact with other SSA affiliate leaders all across the country. This service is a great way for groups starting to get advice from your peers who have had much of the same experiences as you. This is also a great way to get in touch with other officers from other groups to offer advice as well!

Liz Heywood grew up in the Christian Science Church at a time when it actively promoted faith healing over medical care. When she was thirteen years old, Liz contracted a life-threatening bone disease, but her parents never took her to a doctor, relying instead on prayer as the only “treatment”. She is now working on a book going over her childhood.

SSA Seeks Administrative Assistant

We are hiring a part-time Administrative Assistant to help perform basic administrative work. This position will be at our headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. The vast majority of hours will be between 9-5 M-F. While we will expect a generally consistent schedule from week to week, as long as 90% of the hours are within normal business hours, we are fairly flexible about which hours are worked. Schedule could be updated quarterly. Very occasional weekend work may be required. We have an office of ten people and four remote workers in other states. Click here for more information on the position including requirements and responsibilities.

Please send cover letter and resume to [email protected] by midnight on Friday, September 6th, 2013. You may address your letter to Mr. August E. Brunsman IV. As with all positions at the Secular Student Alliance, this is an at-will position.

Check out our jobs page to see the latest opportunities in the movement.

Secular Legal Society Banners

Check out our new banners!

With our tabling supplies service, we can send your group many supplies that would be useful if you'd ever want to table for an event or just generally for your group. We are proud to announce our latest item is provided exclusively to affiliates who are part of the Secular Legal Society. Feel free to request these tabling supplies from us and others by filling out a request form.

*SLS Banners are free to affiliates who have completed our branding agreement.

Student-Alumni Speaker Bureau

Did you know the SSA had a Student and Alumni based Speakers Bureau?

The Student Speakers Bureau is intended to provide great, low-cost speakers to SSA affiliates. All members of this Bureau are either current students or recent alumni. They are proven speakers that have been well-received by their groups, as well as by other groups.

Student speakers are meant to travel within their areas only; a student from California is not meant to be flown over to Mississippi for an event. Student speakers do not charge any kind of honorarium and are often willing to sleep on couches instead of in hotel rooms.

SSA Speakers Bureau funding may be requested to bring in a student speaker; however, the max for a student speaker event is $100. If you are interested in getting a student speaker, fill out a request form. If you would like to apply to be on the Student Speakers Bureau, be sure to put in an application. It is a great chance to gain public speaking experience, interact with other students, and get even more involved in the movement.

That's right, every time you shop on Amazon you could be giving back to the SSA! Simply use this link instead of the normal Amazon address.
