Last Week to Register for Conference in Las Vegas

The final day to register for our conference in Las Vegas is June 16. You have a few days left to still register but it's best to register today if you want conference t-shirts at our Las Vegas location. Today is the last day to request a conference shirt for Las Vegas. You will be asked if you want a shirt during the registration process. You still have more time to register and request conference shirts for our Columbus location of course. Go to our conference home page for all the details.

Secular Action Website

After joining the secular movement during the end of 2012, Michael Trollan had trouble figuring out how to get involved. His contribution to the movement was to create a website, Secular Action, which lists all the ways in which secular activists can get involved through other secular organizations. Currently the website lists most conferences this year and donation information for different secular organizations but Trollan has plans to expand on the site. This is a great resource, so check it out!

Freedom From Religion Foundation Scholarship Due

The Michael Hakeem Memorial Scholarship essay contest from the Freedom From Religion Foundation is due this week. Eligible participants are college students under 25. You need to send your essay in by June 15th in order to be considered. First place wins $3,000 but there are about a half a dozen runner ups with monetary prizes as well. Go to the FFRF website for full details.

Juan Mendez Speaks at 2013 Conference - Las Vegas

The Secular Student Alliance is proud to announce Juan Mendez as an additional speaker at our 2013 Annual Conference in Las Vegas. The Arizonan native and State Representative made headlines a few weeks ago when he used his turn to open the legislative session as an opportunity to reflect on the interconnectedness of humanity rather than on the divine. Registration for the Vegas conference location is only open for two more weeks - register today.

Meet Our New Intern

We are happy to have Tori Rehr as our new Resource Development intern for this summer. Tori is a junior majoring in in Psychology and minoring in Spanish and Gender Studies at Juniata College. Tori began to develop her interest in secular issues during high school. She worked in resource development at the Juniata College Office of Student Activities. Tori also studied in Quito, Ecuador during the 2012-13 academic year.

We always post jobs and internships in the secular movement at our jobs page.

Fundraising

Want to learn how to raise funds for your group? The SSA has got you covered at our fundraising page. Fundraising is one of the most important activities that your group can engage in. It is also one of the most overlooked activities by many groups.

Fundraising can often seem challenging, but rest assured that it can also be very simple and fun. Oftentimes, there is funding available that your group might not even be aware of; you might just need to ask for it from your respective campus official! Many SSA affiliates have pulled of very creative and fun events to raise money for their group. If your student group has some money in the bank, it makes it much easier to pull off bigger, more fun, and more creative events.

More LTA for 2013 Conference

Good news everyone! Even though early bird pricing for our conference is up, you still have funding available to you. If you're in need of funding then you'll first need to become a free student member and then apply for our Leadership Travel Aid. Several spots have opened up and so there is no waitlist for the time being. Aid for our Columbus and Las Vegas conference locations are available, so apply today!

New Tabling Supplies

With our tabling supplies service, we can send your group many supplies that would be useful if you'd ever want to table for an event or just generally for your group. We have handouts, bookmarks, brochures, pens, banners*, buttons, and literature from dozens of different organizations. Our latest item comes from our friends at Interfaith Youth Core showing appreciation for non-theist leaders in the interfaith movement like A. Philip Randolph. Feel free to request tabling supplies from us by filling out a request form.

*SSA Banners are free to affiliates who have completed our branding agreement.

No Dinosaurs in Heaven

You want an easy and free way to show your group a fun and engaging documentary about evolution? SSA affiliate groups may now borrow the film No Dinosaurs in Heaven from our office at no cost, complete with public screening rights.  You can show the film in any of these three ways: as part of a meeting, a public event on campus or invite the community to a larger event.  We include a copy of the public license agreement so that your campus has the documentation it needs. This opportunitiy is available now through February 28, 2014 - a great opportunity for Darwin Day events!

Meet Our New Design Intern

We are proud to announce Liz Dudek as our new graphic design intern for this summer. Liz grew up as a devout Christian around the area of Dallas, TX. It wasn't until she found the Secular Students at Collin College that she felt comfortable exploring her doubts and skepticism. She has her Associate of Science from Collin College and plans to attend the University of North Texas and major in either Public Relations or International Relations.

LLS Pizza Party Winners

The Secular Alliance at IU hosted a Flying Spaghetti Monster Feast as a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, raising $266 so far this year.. They are the winners of the free pizza party for their whole group. Congratulations! Secular activism is a rewarding experience.

While this incentive is over, it is still never too late to start your own Leukemia & Lymhoma Society/Light The Night fundraiser. Visit our Light The Night Walk page for information on how to start giving.

Service Projects

Service is something that every group should get involved in. If we're going to say we're good without god, we better do some good to back it up. Additionally, service projects build group solidarity, improve the image of freethinkers on and off campus, and make you eligible for awards from your school and the SSA.

Use our service projects activity packet for general ideas on how to complete service projects. You can also check out our service meta-packet which includes different activity ideas. More activity packets will be added related to service soon so keep an eye out.
