Get Involved

The secular student movement is not just about what the SSA does.  It is not even just about what its many affiliate groups do.  It is about how nontheistic students and educators interact with their peers, parents and indeed everyone they meet.   We encourage you to get involved personally.

If you would like some structure to your involvement, the simplest way to help is to join the SSA.  Be part of our democratic organization and let your voice be heard in what we do.

Every so often we do have paid opportunities.  Much more often, there are paid opportunities on our jobs forum.

In addition to membership, we have several volunteer opportunities.

General Volunteer Requirements:

All volunteers must be able to:

  • communicate effectively in both written and spoken English
  • send and receive e-mail
  • be honest, reliable, hard working, intelligent, and all that good stuff
  • put forward a professional manner
  • be willing to use electronic communications regularly
  • commit to putting in a reasonably consistent work load
  • be passionate about the freethought movement and the SSA

All volunteers must at least be willing to learn to:
  • use the yahoogroups file area
  • log into our web based database
  • have at least a basic knowledge about freethought (atheism, humanism, skepticism)
  • have at least a basic knowledge of the SSA - its mission, structure, programs, history, etc.

Time Requirement:

Ideally, three hours a week (on average) is the minimum requirement for a volunteer. However, we are willing to work with anyone to try to come up with a volunteer arrangement that works for us and them. We are, of course, very understanding of student lifestyles and realize that some weeks are much more hectic than others.

Specific Positions: See the volunteer opportunities forum for up-to-date position information.

Benefits:

SSA volunteers receive the following benefits:
  • valuable skills and knowledge
  • experience working on projects that make a real difference in the world
  • freethinkin' friends around the country and world
  • pride in knowing that you're helping to mobilize students for a new enlightenment!

Just do it!

If any of these positions sound interesting to you, please contact August Brunsman ([august@secularstudents.org], 1-877-842-9474), the Executive Director of the SSA. If you would like to help the SSA but don't think any of these positions sounds right to you, contact August anyway. These are simply the positions we have the most pressing need for, there are many other tasks.
