National Public Radio Piece on Ellery SchemppSubmitted by august on Mon, 2007-09-03 21:42.
Ellery Schempp was only 16 when he decided he was done putting up with his public school's mandatory Bible readings. His protest began with silently reading the Koran while the Bible reading were happenings. His protest ended with an eight to one Supreme Court decision that removed school-sponsored prayer and Bible reading from the public schools.Ellery had hope that the country could move on. However, as we all know too well, the role of state sponsored religion in public schools is still a hot topic. Ellery's Protest: How One Young Man Defied Tradition and Sparked the Battle over School Prayer has just been published and this morning National Public Radio interviewed Ellery and author Stephen D. Solomon. Ellery is on the Secular Student Alliance's Speakers Bureau. If you'd like him to come to your campus and speak, contact us and we'll see what we can do. Ellery is also going to be speaking at the next Freedom From Religion Convention, Oct. 12-14 in Madison, WI. |
