Introduction

FFRF We just got back from the Freedom From Religion Foundation's conference in Madison, WI. In addition to meeting lots of great freethinkers and students in the area, we were also treated to a number of great speakers, including our own previously featured Ellery Schempp, Dan Barker (currently on a speaking tour of some of the SSA affiliate schools), cartoonist Steve Benson, the turbulent Christopher Hitchens, and many more.  In this issue, we have a few of the more easily-transcribed-to-print presentations for your enjoyment.

We've also got some great student-written articles, Student Voice interviews and Lori Lipman Brown's blog.  Enjoy!

Matthew LaClair's Story: Part One

Matthew LaClairWhen Matthew LaClair stepped into his high school history class, he had little idea that he was getting into a civil rights battle that would gather national media attention.  Now a senior in high school and the recipient of more than one award for his efforts, Matt tells the story of his fight for freedom from religion.

Christopher Hitchens: A Conference Controversy

Hitchens The first thing I ever read by Christopher Hitchens was a review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. He felt no need to be polite or considerate of how much others might love the series: he just laid out his (less than flattering) review. It would be several months before I realized how utterly characteristic of Hitchens this behavior is. By Elizabeth R.A. Liddell

Julia Sweeney’s Top Ten Things Learned from "Letting Go of God"

Julia SweeneyJulia Sweeney is well known as a former star of Saturday Night Live and numerous other television and film roles. In the freethought community, she is best known for her one-woman, self-describing monologue "Letting Go of God." At this year’s FFRF conference, Julia presented the ten biggest lessons she has learned since the play has come out.

Disseminating Parallel Realities

Chris H (kinda) Some time last year, I noticed that that the local chapter of Campus Crusade for Christ had been quite aggressive about chalking the URL "EveryBadger.com." It turned out to be a close replica of their national site EveryStudent.com; the replica’s main purpose seemed to be to give UW-Madison students (whose mascot is the badger) the false impression that Crusade created an entire website solely for them. The use of multiple sites is, however, a minor deception compared to the contents of the site(s). By Chris Hallquist.

Christian Recruiting: Amusing for Many, Harmful for Some

"Religion poisons everything," asserts Christopher Hitchens in the title of his new book. It is easy to dismiss such sweeping statements, but after less than a month studying in America, specifically in George Mason Virginia, I strongly object to the techniques some Christian organizations use to recruit soldiers for Christ. By Gustav Pace.

Protest Peacefully

Good idea: Protest campus preachers civily with signs and rational words. Bad idea: Shove campus preacher and get arrested. The JMU Freethinkers have the right idea on this one. This article originally appeared in James Madison University’s The Breeze, and is reprinted with permission.
