Rice U. Celebrates Darwin Day

The Secular Students of Rice are organizing Houston Darwin Day 2008. Group president Alex Gorischek shared the following information about their event:


"Charles Darwin's brilliant insights have forever changed our understanding of the biological world. Come celebrate the legacy of modern biology's founder with presentations about his life, the field of evolutionary biology today, and much more."


The Secular Students of Rice are going to have five presenters speak at their celebratory event which will take place Feb. 9th from 2:00pm - 5:30pm in BL131 at Rice University. Those presenters are:

Jim Ashmore--Services Director of the Houston Church of Freethought. Mr. Ashmore will give a brief biography of Charles Darwin and read some selections from his writings in a talk titled "Darwin: The Man and His Work".

Dr. Lesley Campbell--Huxley Faculty Fellow in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Rice University. Dr. Campbell will discuss the basics of evolution in a presentation called "So... What Exactly is Evolution?".

Melinda Fagan--Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Rice University. Dr. Fagan will compare the lives and works of Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in a talk titled "The Co-discoverers: Darwin and Wallace".

Dr. Hector Miranda--Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Texas Southern University. Dr. Miranda will talk about the evolution of our own species in a presentation called "Human Evolution: What Bones and Genes Tell Us".

Dr. Graeme Mardon--Professor at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Mardon will discuss the formation of one of natural selection's most intricate organs in a presentation titled "The Evolution of the Eye".
