Professor Silverman is a National Board member of the American Humanist Association and the Atheist Alliance. He is active in defending the rights of non-believers in the political and social arenas. Silverman became South Carolina’s most famous atheist activist in 1990 when he challenged the state’s religious test for public office by entering its gubernatorial race. Silverman is an endearing speaker and model humanist who advocates tolerance and mutual respect between atheists and believers. He is also an "On Faith" panelist for the Washington Post online.
