 | This Week: Activism Opportunities | | | Things are in full swing here at the Secular Student Alliance office, and there's plenty going on that your group can get involved in. Check out these activist opportunities for secular students! Northern California Leadership Summit: Feb 12-14 If you haven't registered for the Northern California Leadership Summit yet, you're in luck! Registration is still open for this exciting event, where you'll meet student group leaders from all over the western U.S., and participate in workshops and training sessions to help you run your student group. We've just posted the full schedule of events for the summit. You won't want to miss this opportunity! Register today at our Summit Webpage. Secular Haitian Relief Efforts The world has been motivated by the devastating earthquake which struck the capital of the impoverished nation of Haiti last week. We've seen a great swelling of support and outreach from our affiliates, and there are several opportunities to help that don't involve proselytization or religious requirements. The Foundation Beyond Belief has recommended several excellent secular charities with strong reputations for achieving results and working efficiently. You can read more and learn about the organizations at the Foundation Beyond Belief website. The American Humanist Association's Humanist Charities has set up a fund specifically for Haitian disaster relief. Harvard University evolutionary biologist Sebastian Velez has been working with the Children of the Border project, which has been working to help Haitian immigrants since mid-2008, and is serving as the point-of-contact to help the Humanist Charities accomplish real results in Haiti. The Skeptics and Humanist Aid and Relief Effort (SHARE), a project under the Center for Inquiry umbrella, has created a relief fund to benefit Doctors without Borders, which lost all three of its Haitian medical facilities in the earthquake. At this time, all donations to SHARE, 100% with no operating costs retained, will be sent directly to Doctors without Borders.
The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science has launched Non-Believers Giving Aid. They are also covering all of their own operating costs, so everything you give will be passed on to direct relief organizations.
Protest Homeopathy: The 10:23 Campaign At 10:23am on January 30th, hundreds of homeopathy skeptics in the U.K. will be taking part in a mass homeopathic 'overdose' to raise public awareness about the reality of homeopathy. In many pharmacies, especially in the U.K., homeopathic remedies sit alongside proven medicines, lending legitimacy to nonsense. The 10:23 Campaign is inviting all skeptics to join them in their effort to put homeopathy in its place. Your group can join in the mass 'overdose' or help publicize the event. Learn more about the 10:23 Campaign at http://www.1023.org.uk/. Cheers! Lyz |
