Creating a Facebook Group
Facebook is an indispensable asset when starting or running a secular group on campus. While we can no longer create groups for you to use when starting your group, we can help with the process.
Creating a Facebook group is fairly straightforward. Log into your Facebook account and visit http://www.facebook.com/groups/create.php. We strongly recommend that you complete the following fields to make your group more accessible:
Group Name: You are welcome to use 'Secular Student Alliance @ Your School' if you don't have a name picked out yet.
Network: We encourage you to have global groups so that off-campus supporters, SSA staff, and others can be involved in your group.
Description: We have a standard description that you are welcome to use for your page. If you use this, be sure to change "YourSchool" to the name of your campus!
| The Secular Student Alliance is working with students and faculty at YourSchool to start a campus group for atheists, agnostics, nontheists, humanists, skeptics, freethinkers, and other students who do not believe in a god or gods. Secular Student Alliance affiliates promote the ideals of scientific and critical inquiry, democracy, secularism and human-based ethics. We accomplish this through five areas of focus: education, service, activism, community and cooperation. Our goals are to: - Educate ourselves and our communities about religion and nontheism - Contribute to society through community service - Participate in our government through activism - Build a community for nontheists at YourSchool - Cooperate with other groups of both similar and dissimilar viewpoints to foster understanding and communication. Learn more about the national Secular Student Alliance at www.secularstudents.org. |
Group Type: "Student Groups" Some groups use the "Clubs and Societies" subcategory here.
Email: The Secular Student Alliance will create a group email address for you. While you're creating the group, you can leave this field blank, or you can use your own email address.
City/Town: We recommend listing your location, since there are occasionally schools with similar names in different locations. This helps eliminate confusion.
Facebook will let you adjust many settings to determine who can post content, who can join, and how public the group is. We encourage groups to be as open and flexible as possible, in order to encourage visibility and participation. In our experience, the default options are a good set to begin with.
