SSA Goes Global on FacebookSubmitted by Lyz on Mon, 2006-08-14 13:23.
This article originally appeared as part of SSA eNews No. 12 - Secular Summer Fun. ![]() Leslie Zukor, leader of the Reed College Freethinkers, has started a Secular Student Alliance group on facebook.com. The group, which is titled "SSA," has more than 600 members from campuses across the country, and is an ideal spot for freethought networking. "I love the idea of an SSA facebook," Zukor explains. "It's such a great way to hook up with alumni in our movement." In addition to meeting up with alumni, Zukor hopes the group will be the catalyst for nontheistic youth becoming more involved. “I posted a message about starting SSA affiliates, and there was a response within 15 hours,” she beamed. And the responding student, Chris Wilkins, shares Zukor’s enthusiasm for secular principles; “[I] had already started [my] school’s first Freethought Facebook group. Now I just have to see if there is any real interest at my good old Southern University campus.” Facebook.com is a social networking site aimed primarily at the college demographic, but is accessible to high school students and through certain businesses. Although the Secular Student Alliance group is designed primarily for young people, freethinkers of all generations are encouraged to sign up. The URL for the SSA group is http://reed.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2204543896, or can be found by doing a “secular” keyword search.
