DefCon: Because the Religious Right is Wrong
This article originally appeared as part of SSA eNews No. 13 - Odds & Ends.
DefCon is an online grassroots movement combating the growing power of the religious right. We will fight for the separation of church and state, individual freedom, scientific progress, pluralism, and tolerance while respecting people of faith and their right to express their beliefs. If you're looking for a group to ally with, a cause to believe in, or another source of support for the separation of church and state, DefCon is a great organization to become involved in. Their mission statement is a natural complement for the SSA, and their members are both passionate and informed.
Through organization of individuals across the country, DefCon takes action on local, state and national levels. Through "action alerts," members get up-to-date information about issues on which they can have an impact, be it by writing to representatives, local campaigning, or even national advertising. For example, earlier this year, DefCon ran full-page ads in the New York Times advocating stem cell research. The website offers guidance on letter-writing, and guidance on dealing with local clergy, school boards, and newspapers.
