HUMANISTS WITHOUT BORDERS’ PARTICIPATION AT THE NIGERIA HUMANIST MOVEMENT 2007 ANNUAL CONVENTION, PORT-HARCOURT.
At the treasure base of Africa’s most populous nation, Port-Harcourt-Nigeria, on the 24th and 25th of August 2007, the HUMANISTS WITHOUT BORDERS(HWB) was present at the two-day 2007 annual convention of the Nigeria Humanist Movement which took place at the Students’ Viewing Centre of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology. The themes were: DISCOVERING THE POWER OF HUMANISM and WITCHCRAFT AND SUPERSTITION IN NIGERIA. Representatives from the RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, RIVERS STATE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT, OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY, OGUN STATE, UNIVERSAL COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY, OSUN STATE, BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY, MAKURDI, UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR, CROSS RIVER STATE, and UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, EDO STATE were in attendance.

The FFRF's 2007 conference is on Oct 12-14.

Hello fellow SSA friends,

I am the head administrator for the largest atheist group on Facebook, (currently 9,000 active members) and founder of the Secular Covenant. The large number of the members of the group have come up with an idea for what we have called Athefest.

I'll post Sean Goff's excellent summation of the idea:

The vision of AtheFest is to give atheist, agnostic, nonreligious, and freethinking college students in general to have an opportunity to network and get to know others who are on the same page as they are. It also offers those of us who are only acquaintances through online forums and blogs or in other medias of debate and discussion an opportunity to put a face to our names and to build a much stronger and personal community, especially in those of us who are at the college level.

There were discussions started, yet not finished, about the impressions we had of the conference in Boston. This is a great place to continue our discussion.

What was your reaction to some of the religious wordings and overtones in what was supposed to be a non-religious setting?

Now that our 2007 conference is over, it's time to start working on 2008.

We've heard a call for even training on specific skills and this is something we're quite enthusiastic about--at least at first blush.  What do you think?

Do you have suggestions for locations or times of the year?

What else should do to get lots of students from around the country to get educated, enlisted, networked and inspired?
