I'm very excited to be announcing a fantastic new program that the Secular Student Alliance will be participating in this year. We've signed up to be a national ally with the Foundation Beyond Belief and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to get secular activists involved in the fight against cancer.
We're participating in the Light The Night walk, and we want to invite you to join us! It's an opportunity not only for us to make some real change in our world, but also to demonstrate that secular students are a force to be reckoned with! I can't wait to show the movement what YOU can do - so read on, check out the resources we've developed, and get involved!

Secular Students: Light The Night
Secular students, we've been challenged! The Foundation Beyond Belief and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society have joined forces to inspire the secular community to participate in the Light The Night Walk. They're partnering with SSA and lots of other national freethought organizations to mobilize our grassroots groups. Our goal is to organize 100 teams and raise $1,000,000 in the fight against cancer.
We can do it. This is our opportunity to show the world that secular Americans are good without god. But it's also our chance to show the secular community that the secular students in particular can be a powerful force for good. When it comes to grassroots boots on the ground, nobody does it better than we do.
Here at the SSA national office, we want at least 50 of the 100 secular groups signing up for Light the Night to be Secular Student Alliance affiliate groups. While the walks aren't happening until the fall, we're hoping to get everyone on board and excited about getting involved starting now!
How Can Your Group Get Involved?
Because this program is spread out over the whole year, we've divided activities down by semester:
Spring 2012 Activities
- Build your teams and get registered at LightTheNight.org
- Host a Light The Night speaker to build interest and excitement
- Hold at least one fundraising event using our tools or your own ideas
Fall 2012 Activities
- Host another Light The Night speaker event
- Get incoming students signed up
- Hold another fundraiser event
- Participate in your nearby Light The Night walk - and tell us how it goes!

Each group will need and want something different out of their adviser. Where one group might expect their adviser to attend weekly meetings and events, another group may only want their adviser to show up for required or important functions. Many universities require that a group have an adviser*, but many universities don’t exactly tell you how to find one. And they certainly don’t tell you what you should look for in an adviser or what role they should play in your group. I’m going to cover all of these things and more in this week’s article so that you are more prepared and equipped to either find an adviser or evaluate the one you already have.
