For Active Supporters

Q: I am not a student, can I still Support the Secular Student Alliance?
A: Most of our Active Supporters are not students. We rely on non-students to help us empower and mobilize students across the country. If you support helping secular students form communities free from persecution and prejudice, then you support the mission of the Secular Student Alliance. Become an Active Supporter today!

Q: I used to be a member, but now I am being told I am a supporter. Why does this mean, and why did it change?
A: We recently updated our terminology to reflect our unique position: having both students participating with the Secular Student Alliance, and having non-students that love what we are doing that also want to be a part of the SSA. From now on, only students will be called “Members” of the SSA. All non-students are “Active Supporters”. This does not change anything for you: if you are an Active Supporter, you can still vote in our Board of Directors Elections or be nominated. The only difference is you will no longer be called a member- just a name change to help us out :)

Q: Can I donate/renew/join online?
A: Yes!  You can become an Active Supporter or renew your Active Support here. Want to become a monthly donor? Click here!  If you’d like to donate without becoming an Active Supporter, please click here.

Q: What are the benefits of becoming an Active Supporter?
A: You mean aside from helping support and being a part of the largest and fastest growing network of secular student groups? Well, in addition to that, a donation of $35 or more gives you voting rights for our Board of Directors elections, as well as the ability to run for a position in those elections. Supporters also get discounts to SSA events, like our annual conference. The full code of regulations can be viewed here.

Q: How can I become an Active Supporter without giving my information online?
A: You can print out this form and mail it in, or you can call (614)-441-9588 and donate by phone. The address to mail in donations is P.O. Box 2371 Columbus, OH 43216-2371.

Q: Is my donation tax-deductible?
A: Yes. The Secular Student Alliance is a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit, and so any donation is fully deductible in the US. Our tax-ID number is 41-1967141.

Q: Will you trade my contact info?
A: We occasionally trade information with other like-minded organizations, but we will never sell your information. Allowing the Secular Student Alliance to exchange your name helps us to grow membership among the secular community. You can opt-out of this. We respect your privacy.

Q: Does the Secular Student Alliance accept donations from outside the United States?
A: Yes, we do.

For Students

Q: I'm a student, and I can't afford to donate right now. Can I still be a part of the Secular Student Alliance?
A: Most definitely! We understand that many of our students cannot afford to become Active Supporters, so we started our Free Student Membership (FSM) program! As long as you're a student, you can sign up for free and join the network of activists changing the world! Please also check out our list of other ways to support the SSA.

Q: What is the difference between Student Supporters and Student Members?
A: Student Supporters are those students that contribute $10 yearly to the Secular Student Alliance. Student Supporters have voting rights for our Board of Directors elections, as well as the ability to run for a position in those elections. Student Members refer to those students with Free Student Memberships. Student Members can also become Student Supporters by donating to the SSA.

Q: How can I become an active SSA student?
A: To start, see if there’s an SSA affiliate group in your area. If there isn’t, that’s okay! We can help you get started on your own. We can send you a free Group Starting Packet and offer hands-on help from our Campus Organizing team, who have experience running secular groups. Don’t forget, if you’re a student, you can become a Free Student Member, so even if you cannot form an affiliate at your school you can still be a part of the Secular Student Alliance!

Q: I just graduated, how can I stay involved with helping out the Secular Student Alliance?
A: We want you to still support the SSA! We have a new Alumni Program. You can check out how you can get involved in our partner organizations and in your local community. We also have a discounted Alumni Supporter rate for recent graduates.
